Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) : EDGE GPRS

On most of new Nokia phones with Symbian software you can scrool through the bottom and the top of the web/wap page by pressing '*' and '#' keys.
# Shortcut to Select Multiple Items in List Box
You know the list box in many S60 applications, such as Contacts, Messaging, Notes, Gallery and many more. How do you usually select multiple items? The common way to do that is by selecting Options > Mark/unmark > Mark menu. If you want to select 10 items, you have to do it 10 times but there is a faster way!
Here is the trick:
Firstly, highlight the first item you want to select.
Press Edit key (pencil-abc key) on your phone. While still pressing Edit key, press Down key to select the next item. Now you have two items selected. If you press Down key again (while still pressing Edit key), the next item will be selected. It is faster than selecting Options menu, isn't it?
You can also press Up key to select one or more previous items.
That's how we select contiguous items. How can we select random items?
Firstly, highlight the first item.
Then go to the next other item.
Press Edit key and OK key at the same time. If you don't know what OK key is, it is the center key of your joystick. Now you have two items selected.
You can go to the next other item and once again press Edit key and OK key at the same time. Now you have three items selected.

# Using Alarm when Phone is Off
Did you know that you can set alarm on your phone even when it is turned off? This is quite useful feature for people who usually turn their phones off while sleeping. For you who always turn your phones on, this feature might not be interesting. Actually it is not only a feature of S60 phones; some other non-S60 phones from Nokia has this feature too.
How do we setup this feature? There is nothing special. Simply set alarm in the Clock application as usual. Then switch off your phone and go to bed. Next morning, when the alarm is ringing, you can stop it and the phone will be switched on automatically. Alternatively, you can also select snooze if you still want to sleep.

# Displaying Your Name on Idle Screen
Open Profiles application then create a new profile with your name as the Profile Name. Select Options > Create new (some phones may have different menu item). After that, just activate your profile to display your name in the Idle screen.
The name is not only displayed on the Idle screen, but on the screen saver too.

# Can't Install Apps Because Of A Security Warning?
There are several S60 3rd phones already on the market now, for instance Nokia 3250, N71, N80 and N91. There will be some more phones in the near future. One of the new features of S60 3rd Edition is mandatory signing. It means S60 3rd applications, themes have to be signed otherwise they cannot be installed on S60 3rd phones.
What is signing? Basically application signing is a way of adding a tamper-proof digital signature to an application so that no one can modify the application. It will prevent the users from installing malicious or hacked applications.
The goal of signing process is good, but this has created some headaches to some people. One of the problems is installing self-signed application. What is self-signed application? It's an application that is signed with developer's certificate and key. Some applications use this kind of signing, for example SExplorer.
There is an option in S60 3rd phones to enable or disable self-signed applications. If you disable it, you will not be able to install self-signed applications. Some people choose to do it so that they can only install applications from 'trusted' sources. With so many Trojan viruses these days, it is sometimes wiser to disable this option.
If you enable it, you will be able to install any applications, including self-signed applications (but still you cannot install unsigned applications). Some people prefer to enable this option because it offers have greater flexibility. When you try to install self-signed application, you will get warning message, but you can still continue the installation.

# Deleting Item with C Key
How do you usually delete an item in S60 applications, for example, in Contacts or Messaging applications? Many people select Options > Delete to delete an item but you can also press C key to delete an item. It's faster because you only need one click instead of several clicks.
Just remember to press C key when you want to delete something in S60 applications. Most S60 applications support this feature, including Contacts, Messaging, Notes, Calendar, Gallery, File Manager and many more.

When typing name in phone book you can use * or ? instead of one character! mar*ymarry, marty, margy.... mar?ymarry, marty, margy.... *arrymarry, garry, larry.... *arrymarry, garry, larry.... etc..
# Clear Form Inputs Easily
To easily clear form inputs on default browser of any s60 phone.. (to save time pressing 'C' key each time to erase letter by letter) , simply open your Wallet application and set a dot like '' . '' as NOTES. Now each time you face this situation of clearing input fields with lots of words in it, just press options, open wallet, then fill in the Note with da dot. Voila.. All clear!
# Built-in simple Task Manager
Press and hold the Menu button located on the left side of the display. You will be presented with a list of all applications currently running in your system. Now you can quickly switch to any of the running tasks by selecting it and pressing joystick. You can also close task by selecting it and pressing 'C'. If you need more advanced task management, install Task Manager.

# Easy Profile Switching on S60
How do you usually switch between General and Silent profile? These two profiles are probably the most used ones. So it's likely that you have to switch between them quite often.
There are several ways you can switch between General and Silent mode. The easiest way is, of course, to press Power button and select the profile using and key then press OK.
Another way is just to use Power button only. Firstly, press Power button once to bring up the list of profiles. Secondly, press Power button again (probably several times) to select the profile you want to activate. Then press and hold Power button for about 1 second to activate it.
S60 3.0 phones introduce new features that allow us to switch General and Silent faster. Go to the idle screen (idle screen is the screen where you see your wallpaper). Then press and hold # (hash) key for about 1 second. If your current profile is General, it will be switched to Silent; and vice versa.

# Safe Mode
We sometimes hear from users of Series 60 handset users stating that they've filled up their memory, and the memory is so full that they can't get in to delete any files.
We've not had any experience of this, but the best thing to try is to restart the phone (by taking the battery out) when it 'hangs' and then starting the phone in 'safe mode'. This causes the phone to load as few apps as possible at startup. To do this, hold down the ABC key, and while holding it down, start up the phone. Hopefully you will then be able to transfer files from your C drive to your MMC to free up the memory.
As a very last resort, you can format the phone and start again - This will remove all data, and you'll have to restore your phone's information from a backup which you may have made on your MMC or via PC Suite.
If you still can't get into the phone, the final option appears to to be to take the phone to the nearest Nokia shop (or your retailer), who should be able to re-flash the phone to factory settings.

# Subfolders in Menu
If you have already tried it, you know it's not possible to have a folder inside another in phone's menu, because there's no 'Move to folder' option if you highlight a folder. But with Alberto Bilheteria and all his action, the history is different...
1- Open your phone's menu and highlight the folder you want to put inside another folder
2- Press Options-Move and press 1 to move the folder to the first position in menu
3- Open some file explorer (if you don't have one, download from the link below), and go to !:\system\apps\ , where ! is the drive you have some application installed: C for the phone or E for the card
4- Highlight a folder, and rename it to anything else than its original name.
5- Immediatelyperform this sequence as fast as you can:
press Menu key, highlight any application or game (not a folder) and press Options
6- Don't do anything else, but wait until Menu is refreshed. After that, you'll see the cursor appears over the folder you want to move.
7- Select Move to folder, choose the destination folder and the folder will be where you moved it.
Notes:
-The application or game you must highlight at step 5 should be in the same folder than the folder you want to move.
-Steps 3 and 4 explain a fast and simple action that causes Menu to be refreshed. If you like it better, both steps can be replaced with install a application that's already installed or remove some application using phone's App Manager.Anyway, remember the step 5 has to be done immediatelly after the previous action.
-Before trying this trick, make sure that you have at least one item that's not a folder in your phone's menu.It may be a game or a application.
-After renaming a application folder located at !:\system\apps\ , don't forget to rename it back to it's default name.Otherwise, it won't appear at phone's menu and you can't use it.

# Send Command Fails
With some new firmware, some users have reported that the 'send command' (thru bluetooth, IR, ...) fails; it's due to a 'copyright protection' introduced in the new OS. # Better Than Backup (s60)
If you have a problem and thinking of backing up your phone memory before formatting then it's of no use, as if after formatting you restore the backup and the corrupted files before formatting will come back again.
So here is a better way
1. Backup Contacts - Go in c:\system\data\contacts.cdb and save that file in your MMC or PC. Alternatively you can use the Backup Contacts program, download from the link below.
2. Bookmarks - Go in c:\system\data\bookmark.db and save that file..
3. Notepad - Go in c:\system\data\notepad.db and save that file somewhere....
4. Messages - If u have them on ur phone memory then just save the whole of mail folder
After formatting paste the backups at the same place as before.

# Format S60 Phones
You can quick format your phone and you can full format. To quick format goto tools/settings/general/resoreFactorySettings. To full format go on standby screen and put in this code: *#7370# this will leave you with nothing on your phone except nokia software. I will advise you keep your phone on charge while doing this in case of not finishing its re-format.
A Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default!
No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory.
Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted!
It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it!

# How to install software? (s60)
First you have to transfer the file to your phone via Bluetooth, IR or E-mail
You will then receive a message containing the file as an attachment.
Highlight the attachment you want to install, bring up the options list, and select install.
The file will then be saved to your phone's memory.
Ensure you delete the original message once it is installed on your phone, as this will consume memory.
When installing a SIS file, as long as PC Suite is installed and the phone connected to the COM port in mRouter (which should be in the taskbar), you can just double click on the SIS in the PC and EPOC Install installs the program on the Phone, without having to send it to the phone first. This is a good way to install software if the memory is nearly full.
